US CPA Eligibility

image 14 In the United States, the CPA designation is the foremost achievement in accounting and finance, offering global recognition. The AICPA, the world's largest accounting body, administers the CPA Exams. Upon completing all four exams, aspirants are granted membership in the AICPA. However, the issuance of a CPA license is overseen by the 55 state boards of accountancy in the US through NASBA. Each state board has distinct eligibility criteria that candidates must meet to qualify for the US CPA exams.

It is equivalent to the Chartered Accountant (CA) designation in India.

No, candidates can also take the CPA examinations in India by scheduling with partner firms like VGLD, which have authorized relationships with US-based institutions.

Currently, CPA exam centers are located in seven cities across India – Gurgaon, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai, and Trivandrum.

CPA examinations are administered by the AICPA (American Institute of Certified Public Accountants), the world’s largest accounting body. However, the CPA license is issued by the 55 state boards in the USA that are part of the NASBA. Each board has different eligibility criteria that candidates need to fulfill. Eligibility criteria for CPA varies across the 55 states registered under NASBA. Below are the common requirements –

Candidates from across educational streams including students who have done engineering courses are eligible for a CPA license as long as they have 120 CPE credits to appear for CPA examinations.

Each exam section lasts for four hours and comprises 50% multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and 35-50% simulation and written-type questions.

No, there is no negative marking in CPA.

No exemptions are offered to Indian CAs as there is currently no Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between ICAI and AICPA to recognize each other’s members.

Yes, candidates across all levels of CA courses are eligible to appear for CPA examinations.

The CPA course consists of only 4 papers, allowing completion within a year. In contrast, the CA course comprises 20 papers and typically takes around 4.5 years to complete.

The CPA exam fee is USD 950, the international testing fee (to appear for CPA in India) is USD 1510, and the foreign academic credentials evaluation fee is USD 225. All these fees are payable to US boards for various processes. In addition, VGLD separately charges each student a sum of INR 99,000 + GST for exam preparations.

The VGLD fees include original and authorized Becker Study Material for 24 months, weekend classes, guidance on evaluation and examination, as well as CPA License and Job Placement Assistance.
